Streaming Review: THE LAST HOUSE

Now that Summer (and Labor Day) are in the rear view mirror, it is time for the the next Season offering on the Calendar - the Spooky Season.

And one can do worse than start the Spooky Season with the Netflix flick THE LAST HOUSE.

Directed by Louis Leterrier (the Magicians as crooks film NOW YOU SEE ME), THE LAST HOUSE stars two Oscar-nominated performers, Wagner Moura (THE SECRET AGENT) and Greta Lee (PAST LIVES) as a couple who’s trapped inside their home with their 2 children. Over the course of time, they come to realize that not only are they trapped in their home, but all their neighbors are as well - and anyone outside cannot get inside, while “something” starts stalking them (spoiler: the outside people are the first to go).

It’s a high concept film that is made interesting by the fact that we, the audience, are trapped inside the house with 2 Oscar nominated performers, and they are extremely interesting to watch, thanks to their performances and the steady, professional Direction of Letterier who knows when to linger on a scene and when to move quickly from one thing to the next (usually when if you stopped to think about some of the logic of things, they wouldn’t hold water).

Like most of these types of films, the intrigue and tension are all in the wondering of “what is going on” and “how are these people going to survive”. It gets less interesting as the film starts answering questions. These answers are strongly in the “just roll with it” category, so if you do just roll with it, you’ll be rewarded with a creepy, spooky good time on Netflix.

Letter Grade: B+

7 1/2 stars (out of 10) and you can take that to the Bank(ofMarquis)
